Getty and Flickr reach image deal

Would allow Flickr photographers a chance to sell their images

By DAN RICHMAN
P-I REPORTER

Seattle's Getty Images said it will exclusively offer its customers the right to license images from Flickr, a popular photo-sharing site owned by Yahoo.

One analyst said the deal, of undisclosed value, will benefit both companies as well as photographers, who will now have a better chance of being paid for their work.

Within a few months, Getty plans to have a mechanism in place that assesses images posted to Flickr -- among the most popular photo Web sites -- for their technical, legal and subject-matter suitability for commercial use, Getty co-founder and Chief Executive Jonathan Klein said Monday.

Flickr users will be able to declare whether they want their images considered for commercial use. Klein said Getty's customers will likely prefer scenic or creative images, not those of news events.

Routine [Jul. 7th, 2008|05:16 pm]

miss_eagle_eye
I counted how long I worked one day. Fifteen fucking hours.

I wake up, go to my desk, and that's pretty much it, unless I'm out running errands.

Sometimes, I go to a party or celebrate a holiday.

But, for the most part, I wonder how sustainable this is.

For whatever reason, the high school Air Band competition was like the biggest thing ever in San Diego circa 1986. The citywide finals were held at SDSU Aztec Bowl where all the big concerts happened at that time, such as my near-religious experience seeing SIMPLE MINDS.

Anyway, I went to a HUGE high school - the senior class was about 700+ and the freshman class was closer to 900. So the Air Band thing at our school was this massive, month-long process of lunchtime shows and campaigning/voting/judging (and really, isn't this what high school is all about?) which finally culminated in an evening show where the best band would be selected to be sent to finals.

Like everything else in the entire universe, a snippet of this incredibleness has finally surfaced on YouTube:

If you look closely, you can see me when the camera pans the crowd. You can also see my date to the prom, who appears here dressed as a man. Hint, hint, anyone?

Sadly, our best band in 1986 didn't get sent to finals (or included in this clip). Instead, a bunch of popular soccer players pretending to be Oingo Boingo beat out the most *amazing* all-female interpretation of The Time. And at the citywide finals show, there were like three Oingo Boingos and not one Time, which totally sucked (there was, however, a very memorable Dead or Alive).

That same year, I was asked by two of the most popular girls in school to form a B-52's Air Band. We surely would've kicked ass, but I turned them down to follow my dream of being Martin Fry/ABC and performing "A to Z/Be Near Me." We had one practice and never entered the contest.

homo laffs! [Jul. 6th, 2008|07:40 pm]

Do you know what it is like to be gay sit in a theatre and have a major motion picture star make a gay joke and the entire audience laff? Luckily, i have hated Will Smith for many many many years, so going to HANCOCK is low on my list. Maybe I will go now and boo when he makes gay jokes.

Big Willie can kiss my ass!

Man, you have to be a hardcore Linda Blair fan to venture out to the u-district to see a screening of CHAINED HEAT!

I saw this on video a couple of years ago and was emotionally scarred. By beloved Linda shows her tits and getting raped and dehumanized. It is so degrading. Tamara Dobson is fucking amazing in it and has all the good lines, but I just kept thinking, "why, Linda, Why? Couldn't you have done a supporting role in a sitcom or something..."
Do apisode of the LOVE BOAT!
Do a play!
Do something, but make this movie. Seriously an all time low for just about any actor.

We basically had to cross the street to avoid a knife fight (which Richard called the police) and this lady in the audience took her wig off at the beginning of the movie. Jeff, Richard and I just about died. Seriously, f'ed up shit when down.

We got out of it and all of us were completely in shock. Jeff hadn't seen it before and I think he was a shell of a person. He kept asking, "why?!"

There are no easy answers to that question.

It was fun though.

LINDA HAS HAD IT!!!

HOLY MOLY SHIT FIRE!!!
George Michael's show last night has got to be one of the funniest shows I have ever been too! The crowd was so fucking awesome. It was littered with girls and gays and everyone was having a motherfucking blast!
He looked so good and when he changed into a policeman's uniform for OUTSIDE, I think my heart swooned.
It was so much fun, because as i looked around and watched the crowd I realized that almost all the songs he was singing really meant something to us. Just about everyone in that audience us to listen to that FAITH album locked away in their bedroom, making up dances to MONKEY and divaing out to KISSING A FOOL.
Let's talk about KISSING A FOOL! Man, oh, man i lost my mind when he did that song. I had a Penny Marshall moment during it.*

"I'M YOUR MAN" and "Praying For Time" were my favorites, but it was all so good! As we were leaving everyone was talking about it and saying how much fun it was and what a great time they had.

Some of my favorite audience moments were the "Careless Whisper" sing a long, Drunk guy stumbling out of his row to serenade "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" to some unsuspecting gay. It was one of those moments when you don't realize that you are dealing with a crazy person until it is too late. And as we walked to our car, this girl walking by herself and dressed to the nines was singing and doing a little show to "Kissing A Fool".

I love George!!!

And i love this George Michael too!

*Penny Marshall moment- taken from Barbra concert at the MGM grand, when Barbra hits a high note that is so breathtaking and the song ends, the camera pans to the audience and Penny Marshall is propelled out of her seat, clapping and screaming insanely by the sheer force of diva love.

My friends from portland, Andy & Andre gave me two main floor tickets to George Micheal a Key Arena for tonight. It was a pretty awesome show. He lay for almost three hours. Here are some camera phone photos of show so you can get an idea of the stage set up. Thanks A&A for the (quite expansive) tickets!!!

after the true colors show last night [Jul. 2nd, 2008|04:45 pm]

keithenator
We had aftershow passes, along with a handful of other people.

A roadie dude led us backstage: "Wait here - they're doing something for Fred's birthday right now." Which we could see from a briefly-open door was involving a lap dance.

Abraham: "Yeah, we're supposed to be in there."

Which we kinda were but kinda weren't but that was good enough for the roadie - he led the three of us inside.

After the lap dance, we sang "Happy Birthday" to Fred and Cyndi Lauper gave us cake. "Eat up, dolls!"

It's probably a good thing that the hotel bar where The B-52's were staying had already closed by the time we got there.

"good bad" [Jul. 2nd, 2008|11:39 am]

You know things are 'good bad' when Starbucks announces plans to close 600 stores. I hope some enterprising entrepreneur moves in to some of the vacant Starbucks spots with a male version of those sexy coffee stands.

This whole reverse globalization trend is interesting, too.

Back to normal [Jul. 1st, 2008|08:56 am]

I was somewhat bedraggled when I tromped over to Archive Coffee yesterday to get some work done. This probably explains my lack of grace, because I tripped INTO the coffee store. Seriously, everyone in the coffee shop stopped to see what happened because I made such a racket. I fell on my FACE--before I even officially entered the establishment. I actually had to make an announcement that I was okay.

The other noteworthy thing that happened to me yesterday was that I was walking along the street, minding my own business, when a homeless man said the strangest thing to me: "You look so wholesome, but your step is like the marine corp."

I'm still trying to figure that one out.

so i missed pride... [Jun. 30th, 2008|06:44 pm]

rollerboogieboy
So i missed Pride. I was too busying banging my BF and watching RED SONJA. I think that is about as gay as you can get. Also I am doing my pride part. Last week I went to see that busted drag queen at neighbors and saw the ONONOS at RE-BAR both on a monday night. Over the weekend I celebrated Jeff's b-day and this week I am going to the TRUE COLORS tour (p.s. don't get me started on how Deborah Cox is only doing the east coast shows), George Micheal on Wednesday, Linda Blair tribute night at BADMOVIEART at Mcleod Residence on Thrs. and then another dose of Linda Blair fun at the Grand ILLUSION late night movie with CHAINED HEAT!!!

I think i am doing my part.

Big reveal [Jun. 30th, 2008|09:33 am]

miss_eagle_eye
The bad news is that the articles are coming in... and they are for the most part pretty horrible.

The good news is that I'm "editing" (read: rewriting) them and realizing that I CAN do this. At the end of the day, if this whole thing doesn't pan out, it's a great educational experience: Now that I know people who write for the The New York Times can't write very well, I have to be a little more confident about writing myself (and so should you!). They're all good reporters--they just can't write or string a story together worth shit. It's appalling and mind-blowing and relieving all at the same time. It also makes me a little sad because now I know that every writer I've loved may not have really been fully responsible for their publications.

But we already remember that from last winter's New Yorker reveal when they published Ray Carver's edited masterpiece.
